Expensive exclusion – (Non)Accesibility after reconstruction

On the eve of Eurovision Livoberezhna metro station was reconstructed.
This is the nearest metro station to the expo center where Eurovision will be held. The budget spent for reconstruction was 24 838 230 UAH (871 516,84 Euros). But even with almost a million of Euros spent, the reconstruction of station was not carried out properly and did not even fulfil the declared project. One of the most outrageous news about the reconstruction was that doors to the reconstructed station are not designed to meet the needs of people who use wheelchairs. According to Ukrinform news agency, the doors have been replaced recently.
But despite the Eurovision slogan „Celebrate Diversity“, it is reported that out of 7,000 seats in the spectator area of the expo center where Eurovision will be held, only 50 seats will be provided for people using wheelchairs. Media still do not pay attention to this fact. One piece published on the Ukrinform website is triumphantly called „Eurovision will pass, and new roads with sidewalks will remain here.“
But what will remain, exactly? For clarity, let us again repeat the numbers – 6550 seats are not suitable for people in wheelchairs, and only 50 seats are suitable.

Напередодні Євробачення станцію метро “Лівобережна” реконструювали.
На реконструкцію було витрачено бюджет в 24 838 230 грн. Але майже мільйон доларів не дав змоги зробити ремонт станції якісним і навіть відповідати заявленому проектові. Одна з найбільш гучних новин про реконструкцію була така – двері не розраховані на людей, які пересуваються на візку. Наразі Укрінформ повідомив, що двері замінили.
Але попри слоган Євробачення “Святкуємо різноманіття” відомо, що серед 7000 місць на трибунах майданчику, де проходитиме Євробачення, тільки 50 місць буде передбачено для людей, що пересуваються на візках. Медіа досі не звертають на це увагу. Матеріал на сайті Укрінформ переможно називається “Євробачення поїде, а нові дороги з тротуарами лишаться”.
Але що саме залишиться?
Для наочності ще раз повторимо цифри – 6550 місць не розраховано на людей, що пересуваються на візках – й лише 50 місць оснащено пандусами для під’їзду до них.

„Stadtsäuberungen“ – Roma Siedlung in Brand gesteckt

Roma Siedlung nach dem Brand

Am 30. März um 00:43 Uhr erschien auf Facebook ein Post des Abgeordneten des Kyiver Stadtrats Andriy Strannikov darüber, dass er und seine Gleichgesinnten sich in Bezug auf das „Problem“ der Existenz einer Siedlung von Roma in Kyiv vorbereiten, bestimmte Maßnahmen zu treffen. Näheres zu den Vorhaben könne er nicht sagen. Zitat: „Um der Sache nicht zu schaden, kann ich jetzt keine Einzelheiten verraten, einige Dinge können wir nicht öffentlich diskutieren.“

Die mit Kindern in der Siedlung der Roma arbeitenden Aktivist_innen informierten, dass Menschen vermummt mit Balaklavas am 31. März um 5 Uhr früh in die Siedlung gekommen sind, alle fotografiert, allen Finderabdrücke abgenommen und zum Weggehen aufgefordert haben. Sie haben gedroht, mit der Erklärung, dass bald Eurovision ist.

Bereits am 6. April hat Radio Svoboda berichtet, dass in Kyiv im Neubaugebiet Bereznyaky die Siedlung, in der Angehörige der Roma Minderheit wohnten, abgebrannt ist. Sie haben die Siedlung am Vortag verlassen, niemand kam zu Schaden. Laut den betroffenen Roma hat die Polizei ihnen Zugtickets in die Zakarpattya Region der Ukraine gekauft.

Olga Zhmurko, die Direktorin des Romaprogramms des Internationalen Fonds „Renaissance“ nannte die Brandstiftung, die sich am Abend des 5. April ereignete, als „schon bekannte Methode die Stadt von „unattraktiven“ Menschen für den Blick der ausländischen Gäste zu säubern“, berichtete Hromadske Radio.

„Зачищення міста“ – Підпал ромського поселення

Ромський табір на Березняках у Києві після пожежі

30 березня о 00:43 в Facebook з’явився пост депутата Київради Андрія Страннікова про те, що реагуючи на “проблему” наявності ромського поселення в Києві він і його однодумці готуються вчинити певні дії, про які писати він не може. Цитата:
«Для того, щоб не зашкодити справі, не можу зараз розкривати всі подробиці, деякі речі не можемо обговорювати публічно.»
Від активісток, які працювали з дітьми в ромському поселенні, стало відомо, що 31 березня о 5 годині ранку у ромське поселення прийшли люди у балаклавах, всіх сфотографували, взяли відбитки пальців і сказали вимітатись. Погрожували. Бо скоро Євробачення.
Вже 6 квітня Радіо Свобода повідомили про те, що у Києві на житловому масиві Березняки меншини. Вони залишили табір за день до пожежі, ніхто не постраждав. За словами ромів, поліція придбала їм квитки на потяг до Закарпаття.
Директорка ромської програми фонду «Відродження» Ольга Жмурко називає підпал, що стався увечері 5 квітня, «вже відомим способом зачищення міста від людей, нібито «неприглядних» для очей іноземних гостей», повідомили на Громадському радіо.

„Cleaning up the city“ – Roma Settlement burned down

At 00:43 AM on 30th of March deputy of Kyiv City Council Andriy Strannikov published a post on Facebook, where he stated that he and his supporters are preparing to commit certain acts in order to react to the “problem” of presence of the Roma settlement in Kyiv. The nature of these acts he could not disclose. Quote: “In order not to harm our cause I cannot disclose all the details at the moment, some things we cannot discuss publicly.”
From activists who were working with children in Roma settlement we know, that on 31th of March at 5 am people in balaclava masks came to the settlement, photographed everyone there, took their fingerprints and told everyone to leave. They threatened everyone, using forthcoming Eurovision as an excuse.
Already on 6th of April Radio Svoboda informed that settlement in Kyiv’s district of Bereznyaky where representatives of the Roma national minority lived was burned down. They left the settlement the day before the fire and no one was hurt. Roma say that police bought them train tickets to Zakarpattya region of Ukraine.
Olga Zhmurko, Roma Program Initiative Director of the Renaissance foundation, classifies the arson that took place on eve of 5th of April an “already known method of cleaning up the city from people who are supposedly “unattractive” to eyes of the foreign guests”, according to Hromadske Radio.
